Thank you for deciding to adopt an animal from the Humane Society of Rome shelter. We sincerely hope that we can be of service to you and will work hard to match you with the animal that is just right for you. Anyone interested in adopting a cat or dog must first fill out a screening application. This will be reviewed by staff. Some applications are approved the same day. You can submit you application to us by emailing the completed form back or via fax or mail. Of course you can always come down to the shelter to fill out a form and we encourage everyone to interact with the animal you are interested in adopting first.

Our application is designed to help us determine if the adoption is in yours and the animal’s best interest and to place our animals into permanent responsible homes. We want to assist you in finding the pet most compatible with your lifestyle. Because the animal’s welfare must be our foremost consideration, staff reserves the right to deny any adoption. Staff will review your application to ensure that the animal is going to a good home and that it is also the "right" animal for you. We want each adoption to be a good match. If for whatever reason it doesn't work out, please bring the animals back to us.

In honor of Adopt-a-Shelter-Cat month, 10% will be taken off the cost to adopt an adult cat during the month of June!

The cost to adopt is:

Cats (already spayed or neutered) - $70.00

    Includes FELV/FIV test, first shots, worming, and flea control treatment.

Kittens (and cats NOT spayed or neutered) - $90.00

    Includes FELV/FIV test (kitten must be 4 months old), first shots, boosters (if still in shelter after 21 days), worming, and flea control treatment. Cost includes a $35.00 refundable deposit as per NYS Spay/Neuter Law.

Dogs (already spayed or neutered) - $85.00

    Includes Heartworm combo test, first shots, rabies shot, worming, and flea control treatment. Adopter must also pay a NYS License Fee of $12.50-17.50-20.50 depending upon the dog.

Puppies (and dogs NOT already spayed or neutered) - $140.00

    Includes Heartworm combo test (puppies must be 6 months old), first shots, rabies shot, worming, and flea control treatment. Adopter must also pay a NYS License Fee of $12.50-17.50-20.50 depending upon the dog. Cost includes a $55.00 refundable deposit as per NYS Spay/Neuter Law.

In addition, you will be given a starter kit and a free training DVD (valued at $29) that is endorsed by the U.S. Humane Society.

Senior/AARP Discounts:

Seniors (65+) and AARP members get a 20% discount on all animals adopted that are at least one (1) year or older.

Seniors (65+) and AARP members get a 50% discount on all animals adopted that are seven (7) years or older.

Other Discounts:

Our adoption fee has been cut in half for long-term cats and dogs that have been at the shelter over six (6) months.

Some of our animals have had half their adoption fee pre-paid by donors. Signs will indicate which animals are available at a reduced adoption fee.

HSR staff will determine if you are eligible for any discount.

Once an application is approved, often the same day, animals can be adopted out and go home with their new family. If the animal is not spayed/neutered, we will ask the adopter to set up a surgery date with their vet. After surgery, please provide a copy of the spay/neuter certificate and the NYS Spay/Neuter deposit will be refunded.

All animals adopted from the shelter must be spayed/neutered according to state law.
