Dear Winston,
My name is Carmel. I live at the Humane Society of Rome on Lamphear Road. I am a large, orange tiger and white male cat. All my pals at the shelter tell me that I am very handsome and polite. I love people and other cats. I also have large beautiful eyes that twinkle when you call me by my name. As the visitors enter the shelter, I hope that they notice me. Maybe someone will choose me as their new best friend. The staff has given me all my necessary vaccines to ensure my health. They even gave me a worm and flea preventative treatment. I was blood-tested to make sure that I do not have FELV or FIV. Next, I will be taking a trip to the veterinarian’s office. I need to be neutered and the staff assures me that I should not be frightened. Many of the other male cats at the shelter have already been altered and have explained to me the importance of neutering and spaying.
Still, I have to admit I am slightly anxious of meeting the veterinarian. Have you ever been to a veterinarian?
Just Wondering - Carmel Dear Carmel, Veterinarians love all animals. After all, they chose caring for them as their life-long careers. Soon you will be adopted and become an important family member. My owners know how important I am. Just as they chose a pediatrician for their children, they chose a caring veterinarian for me. Since our owners tend to our needs, it is essential that they establish a health-care program for their pets.
My owners say that regular veterinary care is not an option; it is a crucial part of being a responsible pet owner. Regular health care helps assure that your pet will be part of your family for a long time to come. Dogs and cats can live to be 10, 15, even 20 years old, depending on their breed. But your pet’s health can be threatened by a number of common contagious diseases. Fortunately, most of these diseases can be prevented with simple vaccinations, which are part of your pet’s annual checkup. It does not cost a fortune to maintain your pet's health, but veterinary care is an expense that should be included in your household budget.
When choosing a veterinarian, use the same care and criteria that you would in selecting a dentist or physician. Think about what is important to you. Location? Convenient hours? Range of medical services? Friendliness and commitment of doctors and staff? Payment? Your goal should be to find the veterinarian who you believe can best meet your pet’s medical needs and with whom you feel comfortable in establishing a long-term relationship.
Remember, the veterinarian that you select will want to keep an ongoing history of your pet, including health records that detail immunizations, reactions to medications, surgical procedures, behavior traits, etc. Together, my owners, my veterinarian and I have created a life-long rewarding partnership. So Carmel, don’t worry. Your trip to the veterinarian will be a great experience...I promise.
Stay happy & healthy - Winston PS. Your old pal Winston is putting out a personal appeal to all of you to please help us with our vet bills. The Rome Shelter treats many sick and injuried animals each year and really needs your assistance, so please help us if you can. And please keep all our sick and injuried animals in your prayers. Thank you.
Dear Winston, Hi there, I'm Bo. I've been at the shelter since the middle of February. I'm a laid back black male cat. The staff thinks I’m cool, I can live with that. I like to explore and I sure like attention. I'm not too keen on other cats, but I'm very affectionate around people. I can be a little spunky at times as well especially if you try to hold me too long. I like to move around. I'm looking forward to finding a good home! Of course I’m already neutered and up to date on all my shots. Please take me home with you.
Our adoption fee has been reduced plus you’ll even get a free DVD with some great training tips and an adoption kit! The shelter staff hopes we find a new home soon.
Purrs - Bo Dear Bo, Hello my furry friend. It was sure nice to hear from you. You sure are a handsome guy but I have always liked black cats. Who says they are bad luck. So, you don't like to be around other cats. That is OK, there are plenty of people that want only one cat in their home. You would be perfect for that role. The staff tells me that you are very friendly and like to cuddle. Since you are already “fixed” your new owner could leave with you the same day. And your adoption fee has been reduced also. Come on folks, what are you waiting for?
The Rome Shelter has lots of wonderful cats and dogs available for adoption. Please remember all of my buddies at the shelter that are waiting for a home and someone to love. If you are looking for a wonderful pet, please visit the Rome Shelter. They are open seven days a week.
