HAPPY TAILS: Taffy

Just want to let you all know that Taffy (DOG) is settling into her new home nicely. She loves the kids, and slept with our daughters last night (didn't seem in a hurry to get out of bed either, just like the kids)! At dinner, she politely waited until the kids and Jim were served, turned her nose up at the dog food, and gave gentle hints that what we were having looked a lot better! So, she nibbled on a plate of stir-fry while we had ours. (Even the veggies). She does pretty well on a leash, and has had NO potty oops's at all in the house, much to our surprise (and delight) as we were expecting maybe a couple at first. Even after being inside from 7 pm until 6:30 this am, so we're pretty proud of her. She is a little too interested in the guinea pigs; but, with a bit of exposure to them (a little supervised every day) we think the fascination will wear off some. She licked their bottoms and nibbled on them like a mother would grooming a pup, but their squeaky protests would only add to her excitement...so we make sure her contact with them is supervised. The cat of the house only glares and grumbles at her, but Taffy has been respectful of Izzy's space. We think with time, Taffy will charm her... along with everyone else she has met. Tell Danielle she was right about Taffy wanting to sit on someone's lap in the car. She sat on mine the whole way home! She also likes to cuddle on the couch, which is what I was hoping for in a doggie. Thank you for helping us find a nice fit for our family.

HAPPY TAILS: Davon

Just wanted to let you know that Davon (CAT) is doing just wonderful!! We are enjoying him so much. He is a character!!! He loves to play and loves water I found out. Jumped in the shower with my boyfriend the other night and likes to sleep in the bathroom sink. He is always at my feet and sleeps at the end of our bed. We just got a new couch and he makes himself at home. He fit right in from the first day he did not hide at all and is very curious of EVERYTHING!! Just wanted you to know that he is doing very well and we just love him.... almost thinking of coming out to get another!

HAPPY TAILS: Little Bear

I saw "happy tails" on your website and really wanted to share ours, as it is the time of year when we remember our fateful trip to your shelter... February 13, 1999. My boyfriend told me for Valentine's Day I could get a dog. We headed to Rome, from Old Forge. Right when we walked in was a beautiful boy named Little Bear. He was a handsome Rottie Mix. We looked at all the dogs but Little Bear really had our eye. We took him out to visit with us and he was a sweet and loving boy. All the staff loved him and knew that we would be a perfect home for him. 7 years later I am happy to report he has been lovingly renamed Marley, shares his home with his little brother Kodi, an Aussie mix and various foster friends. Right now he helps look after a 1 week old orphan puppy, and is lots of help to his mom, who is in Veterinary Technology School. He plays Flyball and loves all his friends on his team!! He is a wonderful boy and has made our heart and home complete. Thank you for taking in and taking care of our guy until god could bring us to him!!

HAPPY TAILS: Pepper & Blackie

Pepper and Blackie… were littermates that were adopted from the Humane Society in Rome about seven years ago. My cats are my sweethearts because they are so affectionate. Not only to me but also to each other. I love to watch them lick each other's faces and see them curl up next to each other for a warm, cozy nap.

HAPPY TAILS: Sugar & Spice

We are always thrilled when an adoption takes place. When it turns out to be one of the many animals who have been with us at the shelter for a long time, it makes it even more special. Sugar & Spice are two of the lucky cats who were recently adopted.

Sugar & Spice came to the Rome Shelter in February of 2004. Yes, they had been with us for close to 16 months before they were adopted! Sugar was an orange and white cat while Spice was tortoiseshell. Both were small and around three years old. They were very shy. We decided it would be best if they were first placed in a foster home for a while to help them become more confident and sociable. Their stay at the foster home helped some, but they returned to the shelter still a bit timid. It seemed obvious that they should be kept together and go to a nice, quiet home. Unfortunately, most potential adopters are only looking for one cat. As such, Sugar and Spice were always passed over many times. By the way, cat lovers and owners know that it is a great idea to have two cats or more—they keep each other company while their owners are away. It is also entertaining to watch kitties romping and chasing each other through the house! As we got ready to celebrate National Adopt a Shelter Cat month, we decided that we needed to make the adoption of Sugar & Spice a priority. Despite our tough financial situation, we reduced adoption costs for not only those two cats but for every cat that had been with us for over six months. While it is essential that we have finances to operate, equally important is that we find each cat and dog a good home. In addition, some generous volunteers pitched in money to further reduce the adoption fee. Finally, during one of our weekend outings to PetsMart, the perfect adopter came through the door. She wanted to take both of these loving cats home and provide them with the calm, quiet setting they needed to thrive. We just recently received an update from her. Sugar & Spice are adjusting well to their new home. They are exploring the house and bonding with their new “Mommy.” It took a long time, but happy endings like this are worth the wait!

HAPPY TAILS: Henry

Another happy tail is Henry’s story. Henry was a very sweet dog who had heartworm. He came to the shelter as a stray. Because he was so well behaved and gentle, we would take him out to Pet Therapy sessions. He was loved by everyone who met him. Did we mention that Henry was a Pitt mix? So much for the mean and vicious Pitt stories we often hear about. Any dog, or animal for that matter, can be vicious. More often than not, it is we humans that mistreat them and turn them into a vicious animal. A person came to adopt Henry, but backed out after a test revealed he had heartworm. Sadly, due to the very high cost of treatment, the only way we could save Henry was if we received donations to pay for the vet bills. An appeal went out and some wonderful people responded. We are so grateful to all of you who were moved by Henry’s plight and donated money to help get him healthy. Thanks to your donations, we were able to get Henry the treatments he needed. A dog must go through a series of treatments over a period of weeks to rid itself of heartworm. During this time, the dog must be kept quiet and calm. Henry is a very friendly and curious dog so keeping him quiet was a bit of a challenge at times. But, he must have sensed all the concern, love and attention we were giving him and behaved like a good patient. We are pleased to announce that Henry is now heartworm-free! We are even happier to announce that Henry was adopted into a wonderful home where he is loved. This dog with a heart of gold got the happy ending he so richly deserved!

We love a Happy Tails ending! Please send us your story.
